Polymers, an international, peer-reviewed Open Access journal. Dear Colleagues, Interest in the field of stimuli-responsive systems has intensified over the last ten years due to the considerable potential of such systems in many applications.

Names coined for ‘stimuli-responsive’ polymers have been given as stimuli-sensitive , intelligent , smart , , or environmentally sensitive polymers . These polymer systems might recognize a stimulus as a signal, judge the magnitude of this signal, and then change their chain conformation in direct response [1] . Polymers that can respond to external stimuli are of great interest in medicine, especially as controlled drug release vehicles. In this critical review, we consider the types of stimulus response used in therapeutic applications and the main classes of responsive materials developed to date. Responsive polymer materials can adapt to surrounding environments, regulate transport of ions and molecules, change wettability and adhesion of different species on external stimuli, or convert chemical and biochemical signals into optical, electrical, thermal and mechanical signals, and vice versa. The effects of branching on stimuli responsive polymers are an important issue since the polymer topology can have a significant influence on the response behavior. The selected stimuli-responsive polymers of synthetic origin are commercially available.

Abstract: The abilities of intelligent polymer hydrogels to change their structure and volume phase in response to external stimuli have provided new possibilities for various advanced technologies and great research and application potentials in the medical field. The polymers are usually called stimuli-responsive polymers or “smart polymers.” The changes mainly include structure and property variations, whereas the  (Co)polymers have been developed that respond to a very broad range of external stimuli, such as pH, temperature, light, redox, salt, CO2, electric or magnetic  This review describes some commercially available stimuli-responsive polymers of natural and synthetic origin, and their applications in drug delivery and  Apr 11, 2016 Polymers capable of responding to field or gradient effects that include temperature, pH, light, pressure, etc.

increasing momentum especially in the fields of controlled and self-regulated drug delivery. Stimuli-responsive or “smart“ polymers are macromolecules that display a significant physiochemical change in response to small changes in their environment such as temperature, pH, …

Stimuli responsive polymers

This is mainly due to the myriad responsivities that these polymers can possess, e.g., responsivity to temperature, pH, biomolecules, CO 2, light, and electricity. As a result, these stimuli-responsive devices 2013-04-19 Stimuli-responsive polymers or so-called “smart polymers” are macromolecules that are sensitive to certain triggers from the external environment, including … Stimuli-responsive polymers or macromolecules also exhibit the ability to convert biochemical and chemical signals into mechanical, thermal, optical, and electrical signals, and vice versa, for which they are utilized in an array of applications like “smart” optical systems, drug delivery, diagnostics, and tissue engineering, in conjunction with coatings, textiles, biosensors, and microelectromechanical systems. The stimulus used for fixing and releasing the temporary shape will thus depend on the choice of the latter. Most shape memory polymers studied so far respond to a change in temperature, but many alternative switching schemes have been developed where the shape memory effect is driven by exposure to light, chemicals, or other stimuli. high performance stimuli-responsive polymeric materials. This review focuses on recent developments in the preparation and application of patterned stimuli-responsive polymers, including thermoresponsive layers, pH/ionic-responsive hydrogels, photo-responsive film, magnetically-responsive composites, electroactive composites, and solvent-responsive Stimuli-responsive polymers undergo a change in their physical properties in response to a given physical or biological stimulus. In biomedical applications, a physician could use an external stimulus, such as light, to promote a change in a device.
