Benthams panopticon was essentially a prison used for constant surveillance of its prisoners.
Moreover, Foucault forgets to say that a fundamental objective of the panopticon was to ensure that the guards can be monitored by the people, so they cannot abuse their power over inmates. Lastly, contrary to the claims of Foucault, Bentham never intended to apply the principle of the panopticism to society as a whole.
The Panopticon was a metaphor that allowed Foucault to explore the relationship between 1.) systems of social control and people in a disciplinary situation and, 2.) the power-knowledge concept. In his view, power and knowledge comes from observing others. Foucault’s essay is very interesting because I can relate it to our society now and how much control our government has over us. For an example the prison system, even though we aren’t quarantining people with diseases by putting them “away”. We use the system to keep a balance in the society.
